In the fall of 1999, NBC started airing one of the greatest television series of all times, Freaks and Geeks. I'm sure many of you reading this are asking: â??If it was one of the greatest television series of all time, then why haven't I heard of it?â?. Well, there are a couple of reasons why you haven't heard of it. First of all, NBC spent most of the fall moving it around in their schedule, so it was almost impossible to find out when a new episode was on. Secondly, the network cancelled it after just one season. So, for those reasons alone, you have probably never seen an episode.

Believe me though, it was a really great show - possibly my favourite television series ever. I never missed an episode. In fact, I have a number of episodes on VHS which I have been slowly wearing out over the past couple of years. I was thrilled to see that the series has recently been released in the form of a DVD box set, and last week I picked up a copy for myself. I've spent the last week or so watching the entire series over from start to finish, and have been enjoying every minute of it. The set has all eighteen episode, as well as deleted scenes, 29 different commentary tracks, and a bunch of other really cool features. Definitely worth the sixty dollar price tag.
The show was basically about what it was like to be an â??outsiderâ?? in high school in the 80's. The writers, directors and actors were able to capture the awkwardness and uncertainty of what it was like to be a freak or a geek growing up in a world where you seemed to be different than everyone else. Definitely something I can relate my high school experiences to; I was most definitely a geek. A geek with a mullet. A geek with a mullet that used to eat lunch in the band room..... and I wasn't even in band.
There are no â??Beverly Hills 90210â? type characters, or scenarios in Freaks and Geeks. It is a very true to life series that has some incredibly funny, as well as serious moments - a great mix of comedy and drama. The cast is phenomenal, and make for some very believable and memorable characters. The soundtrack to the series is pretty amazing too, everything from Van Halen, The Who, Queen, Joe Jackson, The Cars, Skynyrd, Rush, and tons more - lots of great late 70's and early 80's rock and roll that adds so much to each episode.
If you've never seen Freaks and Geeks, find someone who owns the DVD set and borrow it from them. [No, you can't borrow mine, I haven't finished it yet!]. Or, buy the series yourself, you will not be disappointed.
